James Myers

James I. Myers, 94, of Logansport, passed away Monday September 25, 2017 in his residence surrounded by his family.

Born January 24, 1923 in Cass County Indiana he was the son to the late Glen and Hazel Marie (Anderson) Myers.

On December 1, 1945 in Logansport he married the love of his life Lena Gertrude Wooldridge who preceded in death on April 3, 2012.

He retired from Pro-Ag Co in December 1984 as a petroleum serviceman which was formerly Indiana Farm Bureau Coop. He was also a Veteran of World War II, serving as Flight Engineer in the 2nd Air Division, 8th Air Force, 489th Bomb Group assigned to a B-24 bomber. While in theatre he was stationed at Halton Field at Halesworth, England. On July 31, 1944 while on his 31st mission he was shot down and captured by the Germans. He was transported by cattle car to Stalag Luft IV in the North East corner of Poland. From there, starting on February 6th, 1945 they were forced to march 85 days at an estimated 580 miles, back to Germany as Russians advanced. This march is now known as the Black Forest Death March. He achieved the rank of Technical Sargeant and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, E.T.O. medal with three battle stars and the P.O.W. medal.

James was a member of American Legion Post #60

Surviving are two sons, Robert J. (Diane) Myers, Sparta, TN; Randall L. (Kathy) Myers, Logansport, IN; one brother, Richard (Martina) Myers, Logansport, IN; half brother, Robert I. (Joyce) Myers, Fishers, IN; Half Sister, Beverly Carney, Lebanon, IN; Grandson, Brian (Rose) Myers, Greenwood, IN; five Granddaughters, Erika Myers, Bettendorf, IA; Lindsey Lewis, Logansport, IN; Natasha (Josh) Ploss, Lafayette, IN; Alisha Rigle, Logansport, IN; Marisha Rigle, Logansport, IN; six great grandchildren, Eva Myers, Alexis Brooks, Taylor Lewis, Colton Ploss, Cason Ploss and Morgan Rigle.

Preceding in death are two sisters, Jean Ferriera, Ilene Myers, one brother, John Myers, one half-brother, Nicholas Myers and one step brother Stan Hampton.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Bill and Judy Ellington for helping care for James. Also a big thanks to Erika Myers and Guardian Angel Hospice for his care at home.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday September 28, 2017 at the Gundrum Funeral Home with Chaplain Larry Phillips officiating. Burial with full military rites will follow in Ever-Rest Memorial Park cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until time of services on Thursday.
