Jean Harris, 80, of Walton, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Wellbrooke of Kokomo, in Kokomo, Indiana.
Born on December 6, 1938 , she is the daughter to the late Walter and Evelyn (Downham) Sprinkle.
Jean was a member of the Lutheran Church. While growing up, she and her sisters often sang at church events and gatherings around Carroll County. She graduated in 1957 from Camden High School.
Jean moved to Cass County in 1960 when she married S. Rex Harris and they began their family raising two children, Kellie & Jeff.
In 1966 Rex was elected Cass County Sheriff. From 1967-1974, Rex, Jean and their children lived in the Sheriff’s residence at the Cass County Jail, with Rex serving as the youngest Sheriff and Jean, the youngest jail matron in county history.
Jean worked most of her life and retired from the banking industry. She had worked for National Bank, Farmer’s and Merchants State Bank, Salin and First Farmers.
Jean enjoyed sewing, shopping, mowing at their farm and decorating for every holiday, especially Christmas.
She loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and their many cats, dogs and horses. Jean also cherished the time spent with her sisters. Jean’s smile and loving kindness will be missed by all.
Surviving Jean is a daughter, Kellie (Tom) Shafer, Monticello; son, Jeffrey (Dawn) Harris, Gilbert, AZ; sister, Shirley Schock, Camden; granddaughter, Megan (Chase Hinkle) Whitcomb, Kokomo; two grandsons, Arrick Harris and Alax Harris, both of Gilbert, AZ; two step grandsons, Ren Shafer, Logansport; Ross Shafer, Indianapolis; great granddaughter, Cambreigh Hinkle; great grandson, Brookston Hinkle, both of Kokomo.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband S. Rex Harris and a sister, Joyce Sanderson.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Sharon Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Walton I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Walton, IN.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 6:00 PM on Friday, July 26, 2019, also in the Gundrum Funeral Home.
