Burt L. Gallaher

Burt Lee Gallaher, 89, went home to be with the Lord and his late wife on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. He passed away at Woodbridge Health Campus in Logansport.

Burt was born on November 2, 1934, at home in Jefferson Township in Cass County, Indiana to the late William “Melvin” Gallaher and Ruth “Sandy” (Myers) Gallaher.  He graduated from Logansport High School in 1953.
Burt served in the National Guard from 1952-1960. He attended the Lain Institute in Indianapolis, where he graduated with an associate degree in engineering.


Burt worked at Delco Electronics in Kokomo for 33.5 years, where he received four patents in his career, first as a draftsman and later as a Program Manager.  After retirement Burt worked as an engineering contractor for Naval Air Warfare Center on the F-14 fighter jet. Burt had also farmed his mother’s and father’s farm in Jefferson Township.


He met Ruth Ann Hotz while attending school in Indianapolis and the two were married on September 22, 1956, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Loogootee, IN.  Together they raised four daughters; Deborah (Brian) Kraay; Janet (Larry) Kite; Karen McClure, and Julie (Steve) Board.  There are 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Michael & Sue Gallaher, and brothers-in-law, Rex Hotz & Robert and Patty Hotz. 


In his younger years, Burt was very active in his church.  He directed the St. Bridget’s choir, and was active in the K of C, where he became the Grand Knight.  He was a lifetime member of the Elks, joining in 1959.  Burt was the owner of Gallaher’s Sewing Machine Repair Service, which he ran for 20 years in his retirement.


Burt became a pilot in the 60’s and loved to fly in his spare time. He was an artist & did beautiful oil paintings for his family.  He loved playing the piano, trumpet and organ. He entertained the residents at Woodbridge when his wife resided there.


Burt enjoyed traveling and went all over the USA with his wife, he also took several trips to Mexico.
Burt was a lifelong learner and loved to read. He was proficient in crossword puzzles and all technology, especially computers.  He enjoyed texting on his cell phone to his kids and grandkids.  He will be deeply missed by his family.


Burt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his grandson, Andrew Kraay and his brothers, Bruce and William “Bill” Gallaher, and his sister, Kathryn Norlin.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at All Saints Catholic Church with Fr. Gustavo Lopez officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Logansport. 


Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of Mass at the Church.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Hospital.
