Phyllis was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose life was shaped by faith, family and a tireless work ethic.

On April 14, 1957, in Metea, IN, she married the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Layman in Metea Baptist Church. Together they built a life grounded in love, hard work and shared purpose. As a dedicated farmers wife, Phyllis spent countless hours working alongside Chuck on the family farm, contributing to its success with strength and grace.

Survivors include husband Chuck, three daughters, Brenda K. Overton, South Bend, IN; Sandra (Dean) Gerlach, Lucerne, IN; Cynthia J. (Tom Richardson) Ropes, Walton, IN, eight grandchildren, Amy Loveless, Blake (Bailey) Ropes, Abby Ropes, Brandon (Heather) Gerlach, Kyle (Lucy) Gerlach, Ashley (James) Williams, Shelby Overton, Zach (Emma) Overton, thirteen great-grandchildren and two more blessings on the way.

Phyllis was a lifelong homemaker who also worked at First National Bank, Farmers and Merchants Bank and Sears, balancing her responsibilities at home and in the workplace with unwavering dedication. A longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church, her faith was central to her life and a source of strength and peace.

Phyllis found great joy in supporting her family. She spent many years in the bleachers, faithfully cheering on Chuck and her daughters through countless sporting events- a true testament to her loyalty and pride in her family’s achievements. She was also a charter member of Sugar and Spice Extension Homemakers Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harlan and Susie Powers, brothers, Fred, Bill, Charlie, Don and Eugene, and her sisters, Mildred, Nellie and Gerri who she now joins in eternal rest, reunited in love and peace.

Phyllis will be remembered for her kind heart, steady spirit and the selfless love she gave so freely to all who knew her. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will be treasured always.
