James Dillman

James Edward Dillman, lovingly known as ‘Jim’ to many friends and family, passed on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at the age of 91.  Jim was a caring husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Born April 1, 1930 in Logansport, IN to the late Theodore Edward and Mary Anna (Owens) Dillman. On August 5, 1951, in Clymers, IN he married Phyllis Jean Bricker and in that same year, was drafted by the US Army. A Korean War Veteran, Jim served in the 1st Armored Division and the 3rd Infantry Division. He and his wife, Phyllis, spent time in Fort Hood, Texas before he was shipped through Seattle, WA to South Korea. After receiving a telegram overseas that Phyllis gave birth to ‘seven three ounce babies’, instead a ‘seven pound three ounce baby.’ Jim always thought this was humerous and often warned others of what can happen after you come home for Christmas leave while in the military.

While Jim and Phyllis did not have seven three ounce babies, together they were the proud parents to their two daughters, Patricia Ann (Bob) Thompson of Bonaire, GA and Lou Ann (Bruce) Holcomb of Logansport. Jim is also survived by five grandchildren: Troy (Nikki) Thompson, Amy (Chris) Howe, Jamie Dillman, Andrew (Christine) Thompson, and Braxton Holcomb; and four grand-children: Landon Howe, Dylan Thompson, Braydon Howe, and Ian Thompson.

Upon returning from Korea in 1953, Jim used his G.I. Bill to attend barbering school and opened his own shop in Logansport, IN that he successfully ran for 63 years. Jim grew up in Clymers, IN where he enjoyed sports, was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was often seen cheering them on, as well as the Indiana University Basketball team. He loved to play cards and sponsored many bowling teams. Jim was a proud member of the VFW, American Legion, and Eagles Lodge. Jim also volunteered much of his time and barbering services at nursing homes and hospitals giving free haircuts out of the goodness of his heart to those in need.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 PM Friday January 21, 2022 in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Carolyn DeWitt officiating. Burial with full military rites will follow in the St. John’s Cemetery near Logansport.
